3 Misconceptions About Carefree Black Girls

It's more than a hashtag...
Solange Knowles

1. Carefree = careless

Carefree black girls are creative, intelligent, passionate, and strive to get as much pleasure out of life as possible. They refuse to be characterized as hypersexual, money hungry, angry, domineering, or just about any other negative box black women have already been placed in. Their fight to rise above it all is what makes them so special.

However, this doesn't mean that they don't have troubles just like everyone else. Karyn Washington, a beautiful and bright 22-year-old colorism activist, committed suicide in 2014. Carefree black girls care, they just work against their barriers and try live life as they see fit. Even still, at the end of the day they do not have superpowers, they're just people.

2. Afros, braids, or twists are required

The entire point of the movement is for girls and women to escape stereotypes, not become a new one. Characteristics such as natural hair, flower crowns, septum piercings, and eclectic clothing are commonplace, but are certainly not necessary. What matters is what's on the inside, not what's on top of your head.

3. The Carefree Black Girl movement is just a trend

Just because we've given it a name doesn't mean that it hasn't been going on for decades! Melanin Monroes like Diahann Carroll, Debbie Allen, and Josephine Baker have defied the stereotypical black woman for years.

Personally, I am so excited to see a quality of life being lived by so many women. One thing to keep in mind is that this lifestyle was not given to the black woman by anyone, it comes straight from her soul. So, here's to the carefree black girls. May we be them, befriend them, support them, and raise them.
